Rune Sleuth

How to play

Play Rune Sleuth free online

Rune Sleuth is a free online spot-the-difference puzzle played on a grid of carved runes. Every cell shows the same rune except one near-twin with a single small change, and you tap that odd one before the clock runs out. Grids get bigger as you progress. It runs in the browser on phone or computer, with no sign-in required. Progress is kept between runs, so you restart near the stage you reached.

How to play Rune Sleuth

  1. Every rune in the grid looks the same except one. Find the odd one and tap it. Grids grow from 5 by 5 up to 8 by 9 over 100 stages.
  2. A wrong tap costs 2 seconds. Find it quickly, several times in a row, and the spare seconds go into your time bank, which pays out when the clock runs dry.
  3. Stuck? A hint outlines the part of the grid that holds the odd rune. You get 2 free hints per run.

Rune Sleuth tips

  • Scan rows or columns in order instead of jumping about, so you do not skip any cells.
  • Finish quickly to build a combo, because quick finds fill a time bank that saves you later.
  • A wrong tap costs two seconds and crosses out that cell, so tap only when you are sure.

Rune Sleuth questions

How does the time bank work?
A quick find fills the bank by your combo count: 1, 2, then 3 seconds, up to 15. When the stage clock hits zero the bank keeps you playing until it is empty.
Why do the runes look so alike later on?
Every 8 stages the difference gets smaller and the runes sit a little more crooked. The grid also grows at stages 11, 31, 51 and 71.
Where does a new run start?
Your furthest stage is saved. A new run starts at the first stage of its group (1, 11, 31, 51 or 71).
