How to play

Play Tallybell free online

Tallybell is a free online maths game where you run a tiny corner shop. Customers ask for items, and you add up price tags, work out sale discounts and give the right change before closing time. You can type digits, tap price tags or use plus, minus and percent. It plays in the browser on phone or computer, with no sign-in. A shift serves twenty-four customers, and finishing early earns a bonus for the time left.

How to play Tallybell

  1. Each customer brings one to three items with price tags. Type the total on the big keypad and press OK. Tap a tag to add its price for you, or type the answer from your head: that pays double.
  2. A SALE sticker means a percent off: work out the price you pay, for example 340 - 35% = 221. The % key helps: type the price, press -, type the percent, press %. In change mode some customers pay with a note and you give the change.
  3. Every right total adds seconds to the clock and a coin to the tip jar; the fifth coin is a tip. A wrong total costs 3 seconds and spills the jar. Serve all 24 customers before time runs out. HINT shows the tens digit of the answer: 2 free per run.

Tallybell tips

  • Tap the price tags to add them quickly instead of typing every digit.
  • For a sale, apply the percent to the running subtotal, as in 340 minus 35 percent.
  • Answer five in a row to fill the tip jar, because a wrong total spills it.

Tallybell questions

Is the maths exact?
Yes. Every price is a whole number of coins and every sale is chosen so the discount comes out in whole coins, so there are never cents or rounding to worry about. The percent key cuts any cents, as the old cash registers did.
What is the tip jar?
Five right totals in a row put five coins in the jar. The fifth empties it into your score and adds 4 seconds. A wrong total spills the jar and starts the streak again.
How long does a game last?
A shift is 24 customers, usually two to three minutes. It ends when you serve them all or the clock runs out.
